Grannie Rhodes ' Cottage 1830

The true story of Grannie Rhodes,
but in telling one woman's story those of many others are told.
The 45 minute play and cottage tour goes back to England
in 1824 following young Maria Wilby's traumas as her father is tried
for numerous felonies and she, her mother and two sisters join him in the convict
colony of Van Dieman's Land.
There are a couple of mysteries to be solved, i e why did she have three surnames?
just how many children did she have? what was enough dynamite to blow up all
of
Richmond doing buried in her garden ?
Rather than demolish the old and derelict , 1830's cottage,
Grannie Rhodes' has been restored it to its original condition ,
as it would have been in the 1830's to 1860's .
The history has been researched and a most unusual story emerged, that of Grannie
Rhodes.
This performance tells her story, honouring that small group of unrecognised
women that came to join convict husbands.
